What we did: 

Our debate on "Sugary drinks should be banned" was really good.  I am so impressed with how .  The kids learned how to address their opponents and worked on their rebuttals and closing statements. 

We also reviewed some phrases they can use in their closing statements. 

Lastly, we learned about the United Nations and what they do. Each week we will be debating one issue that the UN focuses on. 

 

What they need to do: 

This week we will focus on Climate Change & the Environment.  

The team will debate the following: 

"Hunting Animals should be banned" 

We will have a 3-way debate, which each person representing their country. 

Cora: USA

Titus: Kenya

Nolan: China

 

 

Day 3: Oct 07, 2020

What we did: 

Our debate on "Pools are safer to swim than Oceans" was fabulous.  The kids learned how to address their opponents and fact check. 

We also reviewed some ways they should make their rebuttals:

Next week's debate:  "Sugary Drinks should be Banned" 

Advocating for it: Cora

Opposing it: Nolan and Titus

Everyone should have their opening statements (1 minute max) and facts ready.  

For Parents: 

If you feel it is appropriate, please record the VP Debate tonight between Kamala Harris and Pence. Both of them are seasoned debaters and the kids could learn a lot about how to make a point in (hopefully!) a civilized way.

What we did: 

Had a debate on the topic they picked: University Education should be free

Started to learn about how to address their opponent respectfully and we set up some standards which they will build on as the class proceeds. 

Addressing the opponent - use one of these: 

If you disagree with the opponent use one of these as a way to politely phrase your disagreement. 

 Their challenge for next week is to not use the term "ok", "hmmm" and "aah" when they are speaking.  

 

What they need to do:

Day 1: Sep 23, 2020

What a great bunch of kids!  I am so excited about teaching them.  

What we did: 

Learned some history about debating and went through some basic rules of debating.

 

What they need to do:

Our Debate topic for next week is: 

University Education should be Free. 

Advocating for this is Nolan 

Opposing this is Cora and Titus

Everyone should do research and prepare a 1 minute opening statement which they will use to start the debate.
