Adventure in India: Opening Night! Taj Mahal!
The boy’s name was Hari and he explained to them that this was an important day. People had come from every corner of the land because this was the day when the beautiful Taj Mahal would be revealed. He pointed to the tall brick wall in front of them, and told them that in a few hours it would be broken down and the splendour of the Taj Mahal revealed.
Both Mira and Teyus were now totally amazed. They had learnt about the Taj Mahal at school and knew that it was one of the Seven Wonders of the World, but to be here on the opening day was incredible! Hari explained that this beautiful building had been built by their wonderful king, Shah Jahan, as a symbol of his love for his wife Mumtaz Mahal who had died several years earlier.
He motioned to the travellers to follow him and jumped into a bullock cart. The cow-like creature with a gigantic hump rocked from the weight of the travellers and Luctus velo and was clearly not happy to have been chosen for this job. Mira and Teyus held on tightly as they crossed the shallow waters of the river to the site of what would be the most beautiful building in all the world.
