Foods from India - Easy Samosa Recipe

Mira and Teyus return from their Adventure in India to tell their Grandma all about the Taj Mahal and the elephants, and of course their friend Hari!  Grandma Tara has just been to the Indian store on Gerrard Street and has some samosas for them.  

Even though today everyone thinks of Samosas as quintessentially Indian, they didn't actually arrive in India till the 13th century.  They originated from the Middle East in what is modern day Iran and were brought by travelers to India.   Today, most Middle Eastern and Asian countries eat a form of samosas, but the one in India is best known with potatoes and peas and a bit of spices.  

Super Easy Samosa Recipe


1 package frozen pie dough thawed out

4 large potatoes peeled and boiled

1 cup green peas boiled

1 tsp cumin powder (available in all Indian stores and most supermarkets)

1 tsp coriander powder (available in all Indian stores and most supermarkets)

1 tsp paprika or chili powder (optional)

oil to fry



1) Roll out the pie dough until it is about 1/8 of a cm thick. 

2) Cut Squares about 6 inches each side. 

3) Mix the potatoes, peas and spices together in a bowl.

4) Put the potato mixture into the center of the squares and bring up the corners so that it forms a triangle.

5) Using a tiny touch of water, close the edges so that it is sealed. 

6) Heat up the oil and fry the samosas on each side - about 2-3 minutes per side.
