Day 5:

Hi all!

We had an amazing last day together - I thoroughly enjoyed being the instructor for this amazing group!

The last two topics we covered were insurance and investments, and what the different parts of each are. We learned how to identify what the investor, investment, premium, and gain/loss in an investment are, and we learned what types of things we can invest in. We also learned about what the different types of insurance are, and why each of them are important!

Day 4:

Hi all!

Today, the first topic we discussed was earning money. We went over the importance of having a job, what different job salaries are, what minimum wage is, what child labour is and how to reduce it, and more.

Then we moved into discussing taxes, and what the different types are, such as sales tax, income tax, corporate taxes, and more! We learned the difference between federal and provincial income taxes, and what progressive taxation is.

I look forward to seeing everyone for our last day of the week tomorrow!

Day 3:

Hello!

We had another very productive class today. We covered topics on loans, including credit card loans, line of credit, mortgages, car loans, and more!

We went further and discussed how to identify loan sharks, what it means to be in debt, and which types of debt are acceptable (e.g. a mortgage for your house) and which are unacceptable (progressively going further into debt because you forgot to pay your credit card bills). Speaking of which, we discussed what your credit score is, and how this affects your ability to take out loans and how much the bank trusts you.

Day 2:

Hi all!

It was great to have everyone back today.

Today, we firstly discussed budgeting. We learnt definitions of terms such as net income, variable income, investments, insurance, and more! We discussed how to properly budget, assign percentages of our money to each category we need to spend in, and how to balance needs and wants when spending. For example, the 50-30-20 guide can be a good indication of how we can manage money - 50% on needs, 30% on investments, and 20% for spending on wants.

Secondly, we learnt all about banking - for instance, the difference between a checking and savings account. We also covered the difference between a credit and debit card, what a check looks like, and what each of their main features are. We designed our own credit cards and checks for some practice and to consolidate our learning! We also practiced some more interest calculations, and everyone seems to understand the concept perfectly!

Day 1:

Hi everyone!

Thank you all for joining us today! We had such an amazing first day.

Our first main topic for the day was how to lead a balanced life, as we learnt about the differences between wants and needs and what takes priority, and how we can balance our health, wealth and happiness in relation to finances.

Secondly, we learnt what the 5 Golden Rules of Saving are. These include:

1) Wait to buy what you want

2) Choose before you spend 

3) Start saving early

4) Stop wasting

5) Set a goal 

These rules will help us save more money, and therefore ensure that we are able to live a secure, stable and empowered life. 

We also began to learn about what interest is, and how to calculate interest based on a set amount of money.

Meet your Instructor

 

Your instructor this week is Mahveen Khalil.  Mahveen has been teaching our programs in schools for more than a year and is very much loved by the students.  She is studying psychology at the University of Toronto.  She has lived in more than 4 countries and brings a very international perspective to her classes.

Program time and location

Date: June 24-28, 2024

Program Time: 1:00pm - 4:00pm 

Address: St Clements School, 21 St. Clements Ave, Toronto, Ontario M4R 1G8

Student arrival time: 12.50pm   

The instructor will meet all the students at the gate at 12.50pm and take them to the class.  There is a lot of construction in the area, so please allow for traffic and subway delays. Please note the facility has informed us that the gates will close at 1pm so please do not be late.

Student dismissal time: 4:00pm

Students will be taken to the entrance gate at 4:00pm.  Please be at the gate on time so that the pick up is seamless.  Please note the facility has informed us that the building will close at 4pm so there is nowhere for your child to wait after that. 

What should young investors bring

  • Snack - the usual nut free, peanut free rules apply along with no-sharing of snacks due to allergies. 
  • Water Bottle

Allergies/ Health Issues

If your child has any health issues, learning concerns or allergies (including if they use an EPI pen) please email mahveen@explorerhop.com and let her know.  Due to insurance reasons, our instructors cannot dispense medication or epi pens but will call the parent and 911 in the event of a medical emergency.
