Ontario Financial Literacy Program

Who we are:

Explorer Hop is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to provide financial literacy education to all. We create interactive, interesting and engaging programs that deliver measurable results. Our unique programs equip students with the practical skills needed for financial wellbeing.

Our Goal:

Empower every teacher with financial know-how to lead the next generation. Our seminars are highly interactive and designed to enable teachers to take control of financial literacy topics and address them head on.

Our Program:

We bring math to the forefront of everyday problem-solving. Hands-on projects start from Grade 4 and can easily be integrated into the curriculum or used as stand-alone programs.

Topics from the Program:

We cover a variety of topics to equip students with crucial financial abilities, such as:

  • Understanding Loans, Credit Cards & Credit Scores
  • Creating realistic budgets and key considerations
  • Understanding Savings & Banking options
  • Comprehending the fundamentals of interest
  • Expertly tackling issues like fraud, identity theft, and debt
  • Exploring work trends future earning possibilities

Financial Literacy Program available in English & French.

Making teaching teen-friendly with gamification:

Through interactive videos, music and game based learning, we make financial literacy relevant & interesting for teens.

How we connect financial literacy to Ontario Curriculum: 

Careers (GLC2O)

1. develop a plan for their first postsecondary year, whether in apprenticeship training, college, community living, university, or the workplace, and prepare a variety of materials for communicating their strengths and aspirations to prospective mentors, program administrators, employers, and/or investors

2. demonstrate an understanding of responsible management of financial resources and of services available to support their financial literacy as they prepare a budget for their first postsecondary year

Grade 9 Math (MTH1W)

1. Requirement: identify a past or current financial situation and explain how it can inform financial decisions, by applying an understanding of the context of the situation and related mathematical knowledge

2. Requirement: identify financial situations that involve appreciation and depreciation, and use associated graphs to answer related questions

3. Requirement: compare the effects that different interest rates, lengths of borrowing time, ways in which interest is calculated, and amounts of down payments have on the overall costs associated with purchasing goods or services, using appropriate tools

4. Requirement: modify budgets displayed in various ways to reflect specific changes in circumstances, and provide a rationale for the modifications

Grade 10 Math (Advanced)

 1. Currency conversion

2. Financial Application: Ratios and percentage increase, decrease and change

3. Gross and net pay

4. Types of income tax and other deductions

Grade 11 Math (Advanced)

 1. Making and describing connections between simple interest, arithmetic sequences, and linear growth

2. Making and describing connections between compound interest, geometric sequences, and exponential growth

3. Understanding the compound interest formula and using it to solve problems

4. Understanding annuities and exploring their relationship with geometric series and exponential growth

5. Solving problems involving ordinary simple annuity

Grade 12 Math (MAP4C)

1. Requirement: demonstrate an understanding of annuities, including mortgages, and solve related problems using technology
