Global Investment Challenge 2 Participant Experiences: Janeel Patel

Global Investment Challenge 2 Participant Experiences: Janeel Patel

About the GIC

Explorer Hop's Global Investment Competition (GIC) is a virtual investment opportunity for youth ages 11-17. The competition is open to 500 participants from anywhere in the world. All experience levels are welcome as competitors learn how to trade stocks and build their own portfolio. And for those who are looking to compete, there are more than $100 in prizes to be won! The portfolio with the highest amount at the end of the competition is the first place winner. All participants will however receive a certificate at the end of the competition to acknowledge their learning achievement.

The next competition runs from September 26th-November 4th. Therefore the portfolio with the highest amount on November 4th, 2022 at 4:30 PM EST will be the winner of the first place prize. Second and third place, as well as the top earner in each age category, will subsequently win smaller prizes.

If you feel that you're on the lesser experienced side and want to prepare first, you have time before the next competition. If you would like to learn how to manage your money and invest we suggest enrolling for the following instructor-led online classes: Camp Millionaire Level 1Personal Finance. If you are looking for self-learning options, check out Learn to Trade and Mutual Funds.

Young Investor Janeel Patel on His Experience

The Explorer Hop team interviewed past Global Investment Challenge 2 participants on their experience, to help prepare future students, and offer them insight into what it's like to compete.

EH: Tell us about yourself!

Janeel: I live in Brampton and I'm 14 years old. Besides the stock market I like volleyball, basketball, cricket, reading comics and I'm a big PC guy.

EH: What strategies did you use in the global investment competition?

Janeel: I don't really have much of a strategy since I am a beginner myself. My dad really follows investing so that's what got me through the roots of it. I just read reddit, and get an idea of what's happening in the market, what predictions people are making.

EH: How did you hear about the global investment competition?

Janeel: So that's actually quite the story. One day I was at school, and a couple of my friends sent me a text, like "yo you got to check this out, it's a great way to start investing and learn." My dad also texted me the link later.

EH: How much investing experience do you have?

Janeel: Actually not that much, I started investing when I got my phone in December of 2020. There were some apps on the app store, some virtual simulation app which you could gain experience from, so I started doing that and made a pretty great portfolio.

EH: What do you hope to gain from participating in the challenge?

Janeel: A bunch of experience, and obviously the top three winners get prizes which is on everyone's mind. I'm just 14 so I'm going to try out for all the other years too, but this is a fun concept. I like it.

EH: What would you say to inspire other kids to get involved in investing?

Janeel: It's really up to the people if you want to start investing. I would tell them about my experiences and how I felt during the competition.
