DAY 1: JULY 6, 2020
We had a great class today! I'm excited to see the work your kids produce. They're all really enthusiastic and ask wonderful questions.
What we learned:
- Three stages of video production
- Shot sizes
- Camera angles
- Introduction to film project
In this project, each student will select a process to film. This can be anything from...walking the dog, making cupcakes or getting ready for bed. Something in daily life that requires multiple steps to complete. Each step in the process will become a shot in their final film.
I have uploaded a copy of the Powerpoint from today along with a video sample of my own "process" film to our course Google Drive folder for reference.
You can access the folder with the following link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1CCdf4z8t3l85O-SUlbnCkWfdnTevIG0d?usp=sharing
For Tomorrow:
- Finalize process and film tone
- Write down the 9-12 steps involved in completing that process
- What shot size/angle would best showcase that step?
- Write a short script (6-9) sentences that tells the overarching story of that process
I'm excited to see what everyone comes up with!
See you tomorrow!

WELCOME!
Hi everyone!
Zoom Meeting ID: https://zoom.us/j/91213831775
My name is Hayley Butler and I’ll be teaching the Video Production & Editing course! We’ve got a ton of exciting work ahead of us this week!
To begin with some background information about myself… I’m a professional video producer, editor & director at Sailfin Productions in Toronto, Ontario! I started this production company in 2016. I’ve also worked at Global News, I was a professional film/commercial actress in Canada & I’m an award-winning documentary producer.
In this course, your kids will be learning about the three main stages of video production at a professional level. They’ll gain a foundational knowledge of storyboarding, script development, shot structure, lighting, camera angles, editing techniques and much more!
By the end of this week, they will have each developed, shot and edited a short film that follows the principles of professional filmmaking in the industry. We’re going to have a lot of fun!
I will be updating the course blog every day after class with a recap of what we learned. I will also provide a Google Drive link where you/your kids can find a copy of the Powerpoint and a breakdown of what the kids need to do for next class.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions :)
Best Wishes,
Hayley
