GENERAL INFO

When? Tuesday, February 27, 2024

What time? 4:00 - 5:00 pm

Where? Bayview Glen Independent School, Lower School Campus, 275 Duncan Mill Road, Toronto, Ontario M3B 3H9.  Phone: 416.443.1030

Which room?  When you enter, go to the reception and sign in and let them know you are heading to the LIBRARY

Note: Bayview Glen is going through a massive rebuilding program and the entrance is under construction. (They are building a third building with a pool and impressive facilities in the adjacent plot)  There may be some inconvenience because of this.

ALL CONTESTANTS SHOULD ARRIVE AT 3.45pm.  For those coming from Mississauga, please allow extra travel time for traffic.

Parking:

ONSITE PARKING AT THE UPPER SCHOOL: There is parking diagonally across the street at the upper school.  Please note, like every school during pick up time, there is a long line waiting to get into the parking lot so this can be a challenge. I would suggest dropping off the kids and then finding parking. Here is the address for the Upper Parking Lot:

85 Moatfield Drive
Toronto, Ontario M3B 3L6
Phone: 416.443.1030

STREET PARKING: Do not park on the street unless it's allowed as you will probably get a ticket.

HASINA'S PARKING HACK: Hasina parks directly across the Lower School building in the Kraft Heinz parking lot. Pass the Upper School Onsite Parking mentioned above and it's the next building.  The gate is always open and so far no one has ticketed her yet, but there is always a risk in Toronto that this could happen.

Can parents come? Yes! Bring the siblings as well.  Our debaters have been working very hard, and this is a great opportunity for them to show everyone their skills.

Can parents take pictures and videos? Yes!  But please be mindful of three things:

  1. Try to take pictures / videos of your child or their team only.
  2. Many of our young competitors will be on stage for the 1st time speaking solo. Too many adults with phones recording things can be intimidating.
  3. No flash please as we have children with light sensitivities

___

INFORMATION FOR ALL CONTESTANTS:

What to wear?  The Formal School Uniform is mandatory for all contestants.  You are representing your school here.

What to bring?

  1. Bring your water bottle
  2. Each team should have at least 1 computer to fact check and plan their counter-arguments. Make sure it is charged.  You will get the password for the wifi when you come. There are no spare computers available so don't forget to bring at least 1 per team.
  3. Bring a great attitude - remember not everyone wins, but everyone can have fun.

COMPETITION INFORMATION

Topic:

Countries around the world have been arguing about global warming with different countries taking different approaches and different positions on whether or not global warming even exists. The United Nations Climate Change organization has been trying very hard to get consensus between its members. Your goal is to present your country’s position on climate change and convince others that your country’s path is the correct one. Address issues surrounding deforestation, coal mining, plastic water, CO2 emissions, methane and other issues that may impact your country.

Points to consider:

  1. Do not waste your allocated time talking about global warming in general, talk about how your country is impacted and whether or not your country agrees with the international efforts on climate change.
  2. Come prepared to address issues or flaws in the other countries implementation of policies that impact global warming - do research on how governments of other countries represented here have one official position, but in practice do something else. Be prepared to answer the same about your country.
  3. Talk about the impact to your country of global warming and if you feel another country has contributed to it.
  4. Have verified numbers to back your claims - the judges may ask to see your source.
  5. Suggest solutions to get the results your country wants.
  6. Practice your opening speeches so you can finish it in the allocated time (2 mins)
  7. Remember you cannot attack a person only the ideas. Be respectful and polite at all times.

What are you judged on?  You will be judged on 4 things:

  1. Team work
  2. Opening Statement (2 mins max)
  3. Cross- Examination
  4. Closing Statement (1 mins max)

ORDER OF THE OPENING STATEMENT

  1. Brazil
  2. Sweden
  3. China
  4. India
  5. Nigeria
  6. USA
Here is the wheel picker that made the choice. Happy watching!

JUDGES

To ensure fairness and make it more fun, we've invited three former students to join as judges, contributing 75% to the final competition score per team. Our young judges, all possess strong leadership qualities, and are here to showcase various avenues for growth in public speaking and debating. Contestants are encouraged to talk to them after the competition.  Don’t worry, they are al quite chatty. Here are their profiles:

ROHIT SHANKLA

A grade 12 student at TMS (Richmond Hill), he is most often referred to as the “King of DECA” for his incredible sales pitches and presentations. Rohit had a passion for Marine Life and Business. He has launched many revenue generating businesses.  Last summer he was awarded a coveted internship with Ripley’s Aquarium to get a behind the scenes view of marine conservation.
Rohit has also secured early admission to two highly selective programs - Dalhousie University’s Marine Biology program and University of Waterloo’s Environmental Management program.

DIVYA NAKRA

Divya is a grade 11 student at Bayview Glen, Divya learned how to invest when she was only in Grade 5 and aced her investment challenges.  Passionate in photography, she has received awards for her artistic work.

Divya is looking to enter a direct-entry law program and we have no doubt that we will see this dynamic young lady manage some very high profile legal cases in the future.

MIRABELLA KOLODKIN

Mirabella is a grade 11 (Level IV) student at TFS, co-founder and the original brain behind Explorer Hop. She is a provincially ranked debater, a musician who has performed at Carnegie Hall and a sailor with a North American ranking.

Mirabella is currently researching anti microbial impacts of honey (I think I have that correct!) and considering a future in either medicine or opera.

The remaining 25% of their mark will be given by Hasina and Mahveen, divided as follows:

  • 15% from Mahveen
  • 10% from Hasina
