Week 1 - Oct 18, 2024
Hi all! We had a great first session together! I'm super happy to be back at Sunnybrook!
Today, we went over the basics of debating, how to state an affirmative or negative position, what to include in an opening statement, and how to effectively do research!
For next week, we have a debate topic to prepare for! Please remember that for next week we only need to prepare an opening statement. Here is the question for next week, and the groups as well!
Do economic sanctions (punishments) such as stopping trade help protect people's human rights?
China - Samiya, Savannah
Russia - Nico, Sophie
USA - Alex, Isaac
Some top tips to remember when answering this question:
- Consider your country's perspective! Remember you are representing the country your group is assigned, so your argument needs to be based on real information about this country's perspective on the matter!
- Include facts and statistics, and make sure to explain why those facts are relevant! For example, one of the tables in the Grade 6 classroom has 4 seats (FACT), so this means that only 4 people are able to sit at that table at a time (EXPLANATION)
- A HUGE tip to approach this question - consider what sanctions your country has given out/been given, and what effect did this have?
Welcome
